I could be wrong, but my impression is that the MAGA crowd is now much more active in defense of ICE than it was a few weeks ago. Like before, they were relying on the force of the federal gov't to simply "solve" the "immigrant problem". But then, the atrocities in Minneapolis got the opposition to ICE riled up, and leftist voices began to dominate things for a few weeks after the murder of Alex Pretti. But now, it seems MAGA voices are showing up much more in “comments” and opinion sections of newspapers and Facebook. I was surprised to see all the pro-ICE comments about the Romulus detention center on Facebook. Many people were positive about the economic impacts, saying it’ll provide jobs and economic activity. Some of the comments are actually ironic or humorous, such as “Having a jail is a step up for Romulus.” But some are pretty viciously anti-immigrant, saying things like “Get them out, the sooner the better”, echoing Donald Trump. Trump has given them the lead in refusing to make any concessions on ICE activity or methods, aside from their withdrawal from Minneapolis. The MAGA crowd is now stepping up and saying, "No, we're not making any excuses or any concessions." There is no news about negotiations in Washington to restrict ICE. It's a reminder that political movement is not just one-way. As the MAGA crowd doubles down on its positions, the anti-Trump movement needs to get sharper and stronger in order to make headway.
